What is TurboVektor?
TurboVektor is an anti-gravity racer with real vector 3D, written from scratch in Z80 assembly for the ZX Spectrum by Iker Lobo of BokenDev Studios. Pick a ship and race through jumps and tunnels, collecting missiles and repairs while your rivals shoot, ram, and scrap with each other. Championship mode adds standings and a final podium to the chaos.
How to play TurboVektor
1. Set up browser controls
At the title screen, press 4, then use the arrow keys and 0 to fire. Click the game screen if the keys stop responding.
2. Prefer the keyboard layout?
Press 1 at the title screen for keyboard controls: Q / A for speed, O / P to steer, and SPACE to fire.
3. Pick your ship
STRIKER is light and balanced, TITAN brings heavy armour, and VIPER trades toughness for speed and agility.
4. Race and fight back
Hit turbo pads, jump off bumps, and blast through tunnels. Collect missiles and repair kits along the way; rivals can shoot, ram, and be knocked out of the race.
5. Handle menus and pauses
Press 0 to confirm in menus and H to pause. While paused, press M to return to the menu.
A couple of useful pointers
Know your starting missiles
STRIKER begins every race with three missiles, rather than relying entirely on pickups for its opening supply.
💡Pick STRIKER to start each race with three missiles.
Keep the field in view
The minimap displays every racer's position.
💡Check the minimap to locate the other racers.
Race in your browser
No install needed for browser play: TurboVektor runs through the JSSpeccy 3 emulator. Press 4 at the title screen for arrow-key controls, with 0 to fire.
TurboVektor questions, answered
Q:How do you control TurboVektor in the browser?
Press 4 at the title screen, use the arrow keys, and press 0 to fire. If the keys stop responding, click the game screen.
Q:What do you do in TurboVektor?
Race across eight circuits, using turbo pads, missiles, and repair kits while dealing with rivals who shoot and ram. Championship mode includes standings and a final podium.
Q:Does TurboVektor support joystick controls?
The title screen offers 2 for Kempston, 3 for Sinclair, and 4 for Cursor joystick controls.
Q:Can I play on a real ZX Spectrum?
The source offers .tap and .tzx downloads for Spectrum hardware or emulators, plus .sna snapshots for instant emulator loading. The 128K version supports the 128K, +2, and compatible machines; the 48K version runs on any Spectrum.
Q:Who made TurboVektor?
Iker Lobo of BokenDev Studios programmed the game and made its design, testing, and creative decisions. Claude was used as a development tool, with AI assistance also used for the soundtrack and some graphics finishing.
What's under the bonnet?
Proper vector 3D
The track includes jumps, tunnels, and street lamps, with a city skyline scrolling along the horizon. All of it runs on a game built for the ZX Spectrum.
Three ships, different trade-offs
STRIKER starts every race with three missiles. TITAN takes half damage and rams twice as hard, while VIPER is the fastest and most agile but fragile.
Eight circuits to tackle
Race through landscapes including neon cities, desert pyramids, snowy peaks, and industrial docks. Championship mode tracks the standings and ends with a podium.
Rivals with sharp elbows
Opponents shoot, ram, and collect items, and they fight each other too. Racers can be knocked out, so this isn't just a contest of speed.
Pickups, turbo, and a life bar
Missiles, repair kits, and turbo pads share the track with the racing action. A minimap shows every racer's position, while an empty life bar means a big explosion.
Two Spectrum sound flavours
The 128K version has AY music for each circuit and digitized speech. The 48K version keeps the full game with beeper sound.
Why take it for a spin?
Spectrum racing with teeth
Vector 3D racing meets missiles and ramming. Even your opponents have opponents, since rivals fight among themselves.
Choose your kind of trouble
Take STRIKER's balanced setup and starting missiles, TITAN's armour and harder hits, or VIPER's fragile speed.
A championship to chase
Eight circuits, race standings, and a final podium give the racing a championship structure.
